On May 28, Azerbaijani people celebrate the day of Independence.  93 years ago on May 28, 1918 the First  Democratic Republic was established in Azerbaijan and it was also the first Independent Democratic  Republic in all over the East. ADR, the short-lived  independent  government , existed for 23 months, between May 28, and April 28, that was crushed when Soviet Army entered Azerbaijan’s capital Baku less than two years later on April 28, 1920.

The ADR existed during the most turbulent and hard days. Those years were remembered in the memory of our nation as the years of bloody conflicts with Armenia, aggravated by the collapse of the Russian Empire, communist coups, civil war in Russia and the consequences of WW   I. Continue reading

93 years ago, in 1918 year  Azerbaijan had gained its independence. It was the first independent republic in the muslim world. Though it lasted 23 months, till 1920, it  played a huge role in the social and political life of Azerbaijan. Among the best representatives of intelligentsia of the time there were Mammad Amin Rasulzade, Alimardan bey Topchubashev, Fatali Khan Khoyski, Samad bey Mehmandarov and others. Mammad Amin Rasulzade, famous Azerbaijan statesman, public figure one of the founding political leaders of the First Azerbaijani Republic (1918-1920) , was born on January 31, 1884, in Novkhany village of Baku. He received his primary erducation at the Russian – Moslem Secondary School, continued his studies at the Technical College (now Petroleum College) in Baku. From 1903, beginnig as a student and continuing onward, Rasulzade began writing articles in various opposition magazines. Continue reading
