On May 28, Azerbaijani people celebrate the day of Independence. 93 years ago on May 28, 1918 the First Democratic Republic was established in Azerbaijan and it was also the first Independent Democratic Republic in all over the East. ADR, the short-lived independent government , existed for 23 months, between May 28, and April 28, that was crushed when Soviet Army entered Azerbaijan’s capital Baku less than two years later on April 28, 1920.
The ADR existed during the most turbulent and hard days. Those years were remembered in the memory of our nation as the years of bloody conflicts with Armenia, aggravated by the collapse of the Russian Empire, communist coups, civil war in Russia and the consequences of WW I. Continue reading
